Chapter 22: More guts than credited
Certainly, this giant worm sensed that the chances of him winning this battle were not high, so it was trying to escape.
Wistoria charged forward, she swept her claws at the Boreal Worm. As soon as she swept, the Boreal Worm went ballistic. Her claws barely scraped the shell of the worm.
"It seems to have a rather dramatic personality," remarked Damien as he watched Wistoria fend that thing off as she kicked, punched and overthrew the giant worm to the other side of the room.
Everyone turned to look at him causing Damien to mock blush. He waved his hand dismissively and said, "Oh come on, I am not that good-looking."
…
Xavier shook his head with a disbelieving expression. He did not unsheathe his claws instead he charged at the Giant Boreal Worm with his sword.
Damien noticed that Xavier's sword glowed with a strange aura.
"What's that?" He questioned Luke.
The man seemed to have tiptoed his way behind Damien and despite using Damien as a human shield he seemed rather miffed over the fact that Damien had thrown his shoe at his face.
Though he looked upset Luke still answered Damien.
Who asked Damien to be Wistoria's husband?
But Luke did not forget to let out a haughty snort, "It's mana what else? Every beastman has his or her own mana, which they use while fighting or protecting oneself or others."
Luke then turned his head and gave Damien a grave look before saying, "Certainly you should know this right? Even if you have lost your beast nucleus, it is impossible for you to not know about the mana of a beastman."
Damien only smiled nervously.
"So it's mana," exclaimed Dan and Damien turned to look at the 3-D hologram and noticed that the little hologram was noting down something in a mini notebook.
Most probably it was his own way of storing data.
Damien turned his attention back to Xavier who had made a nasty little cut under the shell of the Boreal Worm. The thing hissed angrily as it swept its tail at Xavier.
"Is it just me or that thing is getting smaller?" Luke questioned while looking at the Boreal Worm.
Damien took a double take at the mutated beast and noticed that the thing had indeed gotten smaller.
"That's because it has used up a lot of energy," Dan explained, he was now wearing a monocle but Damien knew better than to think that it was just a normal monocle that humans wore.
Because he noticed a bunch of zeros and ones flashing on the glass of that monocle.
After a short pause, he continued, "These worms rely on the flesh and blood of beastmen to survive. If I am not wrong they cannot survive for long when taken out of the body of the beastmen they are dependent on."
"This one only survived till now because it has been feeding on the blood of this beastman for a long time and ended up mutating. But in the end, it still requires a constant supply of blood and flesh."
"Do you mean to say that as long as it is attacked for a while more then it's going to die?" Damien asked Dan who nodded in response.
So that's how it was eh?
Damien turned to look at Xavier and said to him, "Keep attacking it, it is soon going to dry out and die."
When Xavier heard Damien's words, he did not turn around instead he increased the speed of his attacks, Wistoria was the same.
The two of them tried their best to kill that thing, but it was proving slightly difficult given that it was trapped inside a room which was too small for its large size.
Not to mention they also needed to keep that thing restrained in case it attacked Nicolas or anyone else present in the room.
Another set of bangs echoed in the room as that thing lept to one side. It was slightly trembling which showed that it was on the verge of collapsing, it must have realised it too because a second later it slithered over to the window on the side and —
CRASH!
The sound of glass breaking and scattering resonated in the room.
"Catch it! If it takes refugee inside another beastman it will be troublesome to find it!" Wistoria exclaimed as she chased after that thing, Xavier closely followed behind her.
"If that thing escapes, your mission will be counted as a failure," said Dan while Damien was watching Wistoria and Xavier jump out of the window.
"What? Why?" Damien turned to look at the little hologram who smiled and soon responded, "Treating an illness to its fullest is the job of a doctor. Do you think that you have committed to your duties?"
Damien looked down at the remaining ointment that he had made just now and gritted his teeth. He really did not want to get involved in such a dangerous situation but it seemed like there was no other choice —
Damn it.
He chased after Wistoria and Xavier. That damned thing, he had to kill it no matter what!
Upon seeing him run, Gilderoy turned to look at Luke and hummed, "It seems like the boy has more guts than we gave him credit for. At least he knows not to leave his wife alone in trouble such as this one."
"I hope he also knows how to save himself from trouble as well," stated Luke with a worried look on his face. "That man has no mana or beast nucleus. One hit from that worm and he would be sent flying. Don't you think so my lord?"
"After all, showing courage foolishly is not a good thing. It would be certainly humiliating if he went to save Lady Wistoria and ended up needing saving for himself."
Gilderoy wanted to refute but after a while, he pursed his lips. Because as much as he wanted to stand by his statement, he knew that what Luke had said was also correct.
