Chapter 98: Fools
A second later, Dan's eyes displayed a string of code and soon a large screen appeared in front of Damien's eyes. It unveiled the disgusting sight of the mole that the adventurers were talking about.
It was not only bigger than a cow, its eyes were red as rubies. Its long tail was decaying with blood and flesh dripping down it. To make things worse, there were countless skulls embedded in its tail and decaying front paws.
And god those teeth really needed a visit to the dentist.
In front of Damien the adventurers were still going on and on about how the task was too easy for the reward that the villagers had put on this mission.
"I never thought that such a rare monster even existed."
"And to think that the villagers are willing to take out 2.3 gold coins for a fucking mole."
"You are right, there is no better commission than this one, hahaha!"
Damien's expression changed as he paused in his stride. He looked at the group of foolish adventurers and asked, "Have you ever asked the villagers what kind of mole they asked you to hunt?"
This decaying mole was a B-grade monster. Its tail held a toxic poison that not only melted the flesh off a person's body it also absorbed it. Leaving only the bones to stick to the large tail as they got infused together with the decaying flesh of the mole.
It was a terrifying monster.
And only fools would think that the task was too easy.
Either these men had no idea what they were facing or they were stupidly optimistic.
Damien was leaning towards the former, as he had a feeling that these men were not as courageous as they made themselves.
"No, of course, we haven't seen one before."
"No, we didn't ask the villagers about it either. Why should we? It's only a mole."
Only a mole? Damien repeated as he turned to look at the healer who had mocked him earlier. This one looked like he had a steady head on his shoulders, but Glen dashed his hopes by shrugging his shoulders as he replied, "I have been a healer only for a few months. And as far as I know, investigating the monster that is going to be hunted is not my job."
That arrogance of his! Damien raised his hand and used his fingers to press on his forehead.
"You don't even know what you are facing," remarked Damien. He dropped his hand and stared at the four men with a stern gaze. "Please tell me that you have at least stocked enough weapons and potions to take a monster down."
"What's the matter with you?" Willis arched his salt pepper brow and said to Damien, "It's just a decaying mole; we only need a little fire and some sharp weapons to cut off its tail. There is no need for us to worry too much about it."
Glen, on the other hand, looked at Damien with a smug look on his face. He remarked, "Don't tell me that you are scared?" He then added in a subtle voice, "If you are scared then you can leave. After all, we only asked you to come with us out of courtesy; there is no need to follow if you have wits like a mole. Hahaha!"
Damien curled his lips in a mocking sneer. He turned to look at Xavier before saying to him, "Let's go, Xavier. We don't want to fall into a pit of death with fools."
Before Xavier could say anything, Damien turned around on his feet and started walking away.
Xavier glanced at Damien before turning to look at the bunch of adventurers. As a warrior, it didn't suit him to turn his back on a challenge, but after his arse being handed to him more than once, he knew that there must be a reason why Damien asked him to come with him.
He narrowed his eyes and glanced at the men behind him before saying to them, "You all better be careful."
He then turned on his feet and marched away.
The four men rolled their eyes while Gary commented under his breath, "Why are they acting like they know better than us?"
"They are the ones who got scared and pulled out; we never asked them to."
"Maybe," Willis lowered his voice and stated, "They must be trying to scare us into giving up this mission and then hunt the decaying mole on their own. That way they would be able to get their hands on the entire reward!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the others agreed with him. It did make sense. Better than sharing the rewards with them, that man must be trying to scare them into giving up and taking the entire reward for himself.
"That bastard!"
Fortunately, they did not believe his words, or else they would have certainly suffered a loss.
On the other side, Xavier followed Damien. He fell a step behind Damien and asked him, "Is it really alright for us to leave them alone like that?"
"What else can we do?" Damien arched a brow and questioned. He was not the one being heartless; it was them who were being foolish.
And he was not a damn hero either. Why would he put his life on the line for someone whom he did not even know about?
"The decaying mole is not as simple as they think," Damien told Xavier. "It's a mutated monster, if I am correct. That thing has a poisonous tail that can melt and infuse the flesh of a person within itself. Do you think those men are heading to a mission?"
Damien raised his head and smirked at Xavier, "No. They are heading towards a suicidal mission."
"And you are going to let them?" Xavier asked in disbelief. "I thought that you were a doctor who saves lives!"
"Of course, I am," Damien threw his hands behind his head and stated, "But even if I tell them to stop now, will they? So it's better to wait for them to return crawling on their knees."
